CAREER SUMMARY
BENJAMIN BARBER has combined a career as a distinguished scholar and political theorist with a life of practical commitment to democratic civic practices and the arts that has given him widespread experience as a fundraiser, administrator, public speaker, educational and political consultant and television and theater writer. As a scholar with a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University, he has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, Princeton University, the City University of New York, Rutgers University and the University of Maryland; he has won Guggenheim, Fulbright and American Council of Learned Society fellowships, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Grinnell College, and received the Palmes Academiques (Chevalier) from the French Government and the Berlin Prize of the American Academy of Berlin.
IN ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION, Barber is a Principal and Director of the New York office of the Democracy Collaborative, an international consortium of leading academic centers, civil society organizations, distinguished scholars, and seasoned practitioners committed to developing innovative approaches to strengthening the understanding and practice of democracy worldwide.
Barber was also director of Democracy at Rutgers University, where he also held the Walt Whitman Chair of Political Science. In his capacity as director, Barber oversaw an administrative staff of eight and another fifteen research and project personnel including six graduate students. He was responsible for raising and administering an annual budget of $600,000, the bulk of which came from foundation and government grants. The Center oversaw twelve students on service learning, technology and democracy, arts education, public space and the civic retrofitting of malls, the measurement of citizenship, global markets and global civil society, and civic study circles.
AS A POLITICAL ADVISOR AND CIVIC CONSULTANT, Barber has acted as a counselor to dozens of organizations and agencies concerned with citizenship, civil society, community service, education and democracy. He has been an outside advisor to President Bill Clinton and has consulted with President Herzog and most recently President Rau of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Liberal Party of Sweden, and the European Parliament. He also serves on the advisory board of the state of Baden-Wuertemburg's Citizenship Council. He has drafted papers and lectured for the U.S. Information Agency and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and counseled the Corporation for National and Community Service. He speaks frequently in North America and Europe (he speaks German and French fluently) where many of his books and articles have appeared in translation. He also serves on the editorial boards of many journals including Government and Opposition in London, and he was the editor-in-chief for ten years of the prominent international journal Political Theory, where he supervised a small staff and administered a modest annual budget.
Barber is also Chairman and Chief Strategic Officer of Bodies Electric, L.L.C, a democratic technology company that develops and markets the deliberative software "Unchat," that provides democratic solutions for a wired world.
FOR TELEVISION AND THE THEATER, Barber appears frequently on television, including the Jim Lehrer News Hour, Fox & Friends, Charlie Rose, McLaughlin One on One, C-Span and Nightline. Barber has written and directed in areas related to his commitment to democratic practice. With Patrick Watson he wrote and edited for television the prize-winning ten-part PBS/BBC series The Struggle for Democracy. He has also contributed to the British series Greek Fire and Farmers' Insurance Corporation's prize-winning civic education series for PBS called The American Promise. His plays have been produced off-Broadway in New York as well as at the Berkshire Theater Festival, Colorado College and the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth. His song lyrics for British tenor Martin George Quincy's opera Home and the River have been produced by Encompass Music Theater in New York.
AMONG BARBER'S SEVENTEEN BOOKS are the classic Strong Democracy (translated into many languages) and the Princeton University Press editions of his philosophical essays (The Conquest of Politics) and his forthcoming American essays (American Essays), as well as his worldwide bestseller Jihad Versus McWorld (published with a new introduction in 2001 and translated into a dozen languages). His study of civil society (A Place for Us: Civilizing Society and Domesticating the Marketplace) was published by Hill and Wang in 1998. His novel Marriage Voices was published by Simon and Schuster in 1981 and appeared on several "best novel of the year" lists. His most recent book is Fear's Empire: War Terrorism and Democracy. His next book, Consumed: The Fate of Citizens under Capitalism Triumphant, will be published in early 2007 by W.W. Norton & Co.
